The teenage years can be an exciting time, characterized by newfound exploration, healthy risk-taking, and critical-thinking skills. However, it’s also a time when adolescents face an increased risk of experiencing depression, anxiety, participating in unhealthy decision making, anger, isolation, poor communication, alongside a wide variety of difficult life transitions as they journey through middle and high school.
Alongside your efforts as a parent, teen counseling can offer support to these young individuals—and just as importantly—teach them to understand themselves better, while learning how to express their emotions, make healthy decisions, and accomplish their goals.
Our skilled clinicians provide a safe space for children to explore their emotions. Children can learn coping skills to help with frustration associated with every day challenges. We see children age 5 and older virtually and in person to help with ADHD, ADD, irritability and impulsivity, OCD and other symptoms and diagnoses.
Depression, fear, and anxiety are some of the most common and uncomfortable emotions that we can experience at some point in our lives. Through counseling and treatment, we are able to help you recover motivation, perspective, and joy that you once had in your life.
Have you lost someone you love or an important relationship? Or are grieving over a diagnosis of chronic pain or illness that impacts your typical functioning, your interpersonal relationships, and/or has negative effects on your self perception? Are you grieving changes in life, such as recent unemployment or retirement, and need support while adjusting to a new way of living?
Are you feeling easily stressed and/or overwhelmed? Experience feelings of self-doubt, fear of failure or low self worth? Are relationships suffering because of difficulty communicating, feeling invalidated or unheard, or feelings of irritability? Or perhaps you need guidance overcoming codependent behaviors in your relationships.
Did you know that 90 percent of people studied that were suffering with Depression and/or Anxiety felt relief, lessened symptoms and higher self esteem after sitting in nature, or a short walk outside?
One study also found that 94% of people with mental illnesses agreed that being in, or exposed to nature put them in a positive mood and mindset.
Nature can help heal our minds, help us become more open to participating in self discovery and helps us become more tolerant of undesirable emotions, such as symptoms that come along with Anxiety, Depression and Mood Disorders.
Join me as we explore getting off the couch, out of the office and into the Outdoors! Whether we decide to have a session in the park, go for an easy stroll outside in town, or tackle a challenging hike, the benefits are worth exploring while we address your treatment goals at the same time.
Have you been arrested for a DWI, DWAI and are being directed by the DMV, your attorney or court to get an alcohol assessment? I am a certified OASAS Impaired Driver System provider in New York State.
In most cases, once your assessment is scheduled, we only need to meet in person once and I then directly input your information in to the DMV and NY State system.
Having the ability to tolerate unwanted emotions-and reframe our thinking is key to navigating through our best life.
Are you willing to invest time into your personal growth to improve your quality of life? Are you struggling with "the hamster on the wheel," and other symptoms of anxiety and depression? We believe we all need someone outside of our personal lives to provide an objective and confidential ear with feedback in order to discover our own solutions that reside within ourselves.
Gentle confrontation, psycho-education along with ongoing goal-based treatment is needed to help point out our own unhealthy thinking patterns and work toward healthier coping skills, improve our functioning and relationships with ourselves and others.
Our goal is to help individuals heal, energize, and become aware of their inner strengths. We achieve this by providing a neutral safe space that is free from judgement, listening to your concerns, and customizing a treatment plan. We tailor treatment modalities to include an eclectic approach for each individual's needs at the time (including CBT, DBT skills, and solution -focused therapy to name a few). Let's review your personal goals and how we can assist in helping you develop coping skills to deal with the stress of unpredictable and sometimes uncontrollable life situations.

Having struggled with anxiety for many years, I understand how debilitating it can be. Depression, grief, and life changes can be so difficult to manage that we end up losing ourselves. Do you believe that there is a possibility for things to be different for you?
My role as a counselor is to provide a space where clients can be vulnerable and open about the challenges they face, and it’s such a privilege for me to do so. Utilizing a collaborative approach, together we identify realistic goals that promote better wellbeing and improved quality of life. Drawing upon cognitive-behavioral therapy, mindfulness, as well as other modalities, we gradually learn skills and restructure the way we think so that reprieve from these struggles can be reached. It’s so worth it to do the work. There is an excerpt from Pema Chodron’s book “When Things Fall Apart” that I especially appreciate when thinking about this type of work. It goes:
"There is a teaching that says that behind all hardening and tightening and rigidity of the heart, there's always fear. But if you touch fear, behind fear there is a soft spot. And if you touch that soft spot, you find the vast blue sky"“
"In the brief time I've worked with Lauren, she has helped me in many ways. She is the first therapist I've ever worked with and I am so glad I found her. She is kind, caring and a wonderful person to talk to. From our first session together, she made me feel comfortable and open to sharing my concerns." -SF
"Lauren and I have been working together for some time now. Lauren and I have built wonderful rapport which makes it comfortable to share and seek advice on every day challenges as well as the more intense/deeper challenges of life. Lauren has a great listening ear and wonderful suggestions to assist with turbulences you may endure in the challenges of life. I am forever grateful for the services she has and will continue to provide for me!" CM
"Lauren has been a great help to my mental health since I’ve started seeing her. I feel comfortable opening up about any aspect of my life, I have never felt judged or felt like she wouldn’t understand. I feel beyond blessed to have found a therapist that fits my needs and unpredictable work/life schedule." AV

Whether it is leaving your hometown for college for the first time, starting a new career, getting married and starting a family, retiring, or moving to a new place, each transition brings many challenges as well as the promise of new opportunities. But what if you are someone who struggles with anxiety, depression, positive self-image, or have experienced trauma that interrupts the natural process of life transitions? Or what if the change was completely unexpected, uprooting your life? Often with these added stressors, each transition becomes much more difficult to face.
With a background in community-based work in the field of mentoring, Mary Kate understands the benefits of having at least one person in your life who can compassionately challenge you to see a different perspective but most importantly walk with you in your journey and be your biggest cheerleader. Whether it is a well-planned out life change or a challenging unexpected change, through a combination of therapeutic approaches, Mary Kate creates a safe space for individuals to be vulnerable amid trials, reflect on the experiences that have shaped them and realize their fullest potential.
Life is the greatest adventure we will have. You don’t have to face it alone.
With 17 years of experience as a teacher, I have had the privilege of working closely with children, helping them grow academically, socially, and emotionally. Now, as a child and adult therapist, I bring that same passion for fostering growth and understanding into my practice. I believe in creating a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental space where both children and adults can explore their feelings, work through challenges, and discover their strengths.
I enjoy building meaningful connections with my clients, using a warm and empathetic approach to help them feel heard and valued. My background in education and my dedication to continuous learning allow me to offer thoughtful, personalized care that respects each individual's unique journey.
Outside of my work, I enjoy spending time outdoors, reading, and exploring creative ways to bring joy and calm into everyday life. I look forward to supporting you or your child on your path to healing and growth.
My clients are truly the greatest blessings. Someone famous probably said it much more tactful but, if you do what you love, it doesn't feel like work.
You as the client know yourself best. You may need some encouragement in exploring and identifying your emotions, whether it be from a life transition, injury or illness, suffering and surviving trauma, grief or the heaviness of life. You know your thoughts, feelings, actions and emotions best. I feel my role as a therapist is to help to identify and steer your thinking patterns, to look inward and with support and coping strategies, we can together help you feel more stable, safe and grounded.
The ability to provide outdoor therapy services is near and dear to me, as I suffered from a spine injury and was unable to get out of bed and unable to walk for over a year, from 2012 into 2013. I had to relearn how to walk and distinctly remember how painful, challenging but also rewarding my first few steps were. With the help of (extremely patient and caring and at times overbearing and annoying) loved ones, long hard work with a great Therapist, good corrective surgeon, Excellent Physical Rehabilitation staff, I was able to slowly return to normal functioning. My physical pain has been chronic, but I am grateful for each moment of relief. There is a book recommended to me by a caring provider "The obstacle is the Way," which was helpful to my thinking and acceptance of another setback, that transformed my outlook and gets me by in a different light.
With physical injury and physical limitations can bring many emotions and an array of symptoms of mental suffering. However, I am a therapist who goes to therapy! Despite the ebb and flow of the effects of physical changes, I believe we all need an objective ear and goal-oriented thinking. I can attribute my mental well-being to practicing what I preach and taking care of myself before I can take care of others.
Also about me:
I am a dog lover! There is no other joy than coming home to my fur babies-Does anyone else jump up and down to greet me when I walk in the door?!!! I love just about anything outdoors. Being outside with or without my loved ones and fur babies can rarely bring a complaint!
